Interviewing drop-off without leading the user
Funnel charts tell you where people left. They do not tell you what the leaving felt like. Interviews can, if you do not hand the participant your taxonomy. Ask “why did you skip onboarding?” and you will hear a story shaped like your question. Ask what they were trying to do when they opened the app, and you may hear the value moment you have not named yet.
At Dataqueuegrid we treat research as a companion to app analytics, not a replacement. A handful of conversations will not statistically prove a leak. They will stop a team from inventing a personality for “the user” when the real issue was an OTP timeout.
Recruit from the cliff, not from fans
Invite people who installed in the last fortnight and did not reach the value event. Fans who completed everything will teach you about delight, which is a different study. Offer a small thank-you. Record only with consent. In Thailand, do the session in the language the person used in the app. Mixing English prompts with a Thai UI produces polite confusion, not insight.
Questions that stay behind the glass
We open with: “Walk me through what you wanted when you downloaded it.” Then: “What did you actually do after it opened?” Then: “Where did it stop feeling worth your time?” We do not say onboarding, activation, funnel, or permission unless they say it first. If they mention a screen, we ask them to describe it rather than showing a screenshot immediately; memory of the screen is itself data.
Only after their story do we open replay or screenshots, and only to ask “does this match what you remember?” Mismatches are gold. They often point to an event that fired too early or copy the user never read.
What we refuse to do
We do not run these interviews as a sales pitch for a course. If a participant asks what we do, we answer after the recorder is off. We also do not average quotes into a fake persona. Three people who left at OTP and one who left at empty state is not “users are confused.” It is two problems.
The Activation Lab includes a short interview homework. If you only want the prompt sheet, ask the desk. Start from the journal index for related notes.
