Consent screens that do not kill activation in Thailand

Thailand’s PDPA is not an excuse to greet a new user with a wall of toggles. It is a reason to be precise about what you collect, when you collect it, and how the Thai copy reads. Too many local apps still place camera, location, and marketing consent on the first screen because legal signed a template. Activation then dies before the product has shown a reason to exist.

Timing before volume

If a grocery app needs a photo of a receipt, the prompt belongs at checkout, not at first open. If a ride app needs location, the prompt belongs when the user taps “set pickup,” not during the brand film. If you only need analytics cookies on the marketing site, do not drag that pattern into the native first session.

Teams worry that delaying a prompt looks non-compliant. In practice, a purpose-bound prompt with a clear Thai sentence is easier to defend in an internal review than a first-screen bundle nobody reads. Your counsel may still require a notice at install; a notice is not the same as every OS permission firing at once.

Copy that sounds like a person

We keep a simple test: read the consent line aloud. If it could not be said across a Lat Phrao coffee table, rewrite it. “Allow location so we can show nearby drivers” survives. “We process geolocation data to enhance service personalization and operational excellence” does not, in either language.

Dual-language screens need extra care. Thai often wraps. If the English button sits above the fold and the Thai explanation does not, you will see a language-split drop that looks like a device bug. Designers should dummy the longest Thai string before locking layout.
